You book them through the fishing/guiding outfits - On-Line Sport & Tackle, or Currie's Guiding. Here in JNP, some of the fishing/rowboat rentals are at lakes where you have to walk in (Cabin, possibly one of the Five Lakes) others are accessible by road. It's a shame you are not planning to come up to Jasper - the Icefields Parkway is rated by National Geographic as one of the most scenic drives on the planet. Even to get to the Columbia Icefields area is about a four-hour drive, one way, although most people would take most of a day, because of all the scenic attractions on the way. Jasper National Park, and especially the Jasper townsite area, are not doable as a day trip from Radium. The first two will be the most expensive, Emerald Lake will be cheaper. You can rent canoes at Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Emerald Lake, Bow River and paddleboats on Lake Minnewanka. Locals can rent canoes/kayaks at other locations to use on the lakes, but tourists are a captive market since almost any rental car contract forbids use of trailers or roof boat racks. There won't be any getting around the high prices - rentals are only available at a handful of the larger lakes and there's only one place to rent on each lake. You should also check as to the minimum age to be in a canoe without an adult - I'd think a teenager would be fine as long as the adult signs the waiver, but you might want to confirm. Usually it's a max of 3 adults per canoe and you will need to sign the waiver for teenagers under 18 (19 in BC). There's certainly no problem in canoeing - perfectly safe and lots of folks are out on those lakes when the weather is good. Much colder than the loch I fell into while sailing in Scotland! While the lake is certainly warmer than the stream, I had to wade across the glacial stream that feeds Lake Louise last summer and it was instant pain. Certainly not instant death, but it's not water you want to swim in either. Moraine Lake and Lake Louise are both glacially-fed lakes, so even in the middle of the summer, they're barely above freezing. People occasionally bring their own kayaks, but the rental companies stick to canoes, likely because of safety reasons. I believe the only places you can rent kayaks are down on the Bow River in Banff and possibly at Maligne Lake in Jasper NP. At Moraine Lake and Lake Louise, the only rentals are canoes.
